CONCERTS

It’s a Grand Night for Singing! will be presented June 12-14 and 19-21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Singletary Center for the Arts Concert Hall on the campus of the University of Kentucky. For information or tickets, call (859) 259-4929 or visit www.singletarytickets.com.

Kelly Clarkson will perform at 8 p.m. on opening night of the Kentucky State Fair on Aug. 20, with special guest Gavin DeGraw. Clarkson will sing songs from her latest album and hits from her seven-year career in the music industry. DANCE

Pam’s Dance Barn at 745 Grapevine Road in Madisonville will hold dances from 7 to 10 p.m. every Saturday. There will also be dances the second and fourth Friday of each month from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $5. No alcohol allowed. Call 249-3663.

FESTIVALS

Through September 4 there will be Free Summer Concerts on the BB&T Plaza at RiverPark Center in Owensboro. Each Friday will offer a street fair with vendors and unique children’s events. For more information, visit www.fridayafter5.com.


English Park in Owensboro will be the site of the 18th Annual Yellowbanks Dulcimer Festival on June 5 and 6. Performers for the free concerts and instructors for the free workshops will be Kara Barnard, Dave Haas, Stephen Humphries, Ken Kolodner, Fred Meyer, Jim Miller and Les Gustafson-Zook. Workshops will include mountain dulcimer and hammered dulcimer, autoharp, banjo, bodhran, bowed psaltery, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, mandolin, penny whistle, steel drum, rhythm and percussion. They will be available on levels from beginner to advanced and for children to adults. Workshops will begin at 12:30 p.m. on Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday. The 20th Annual Great American Brass Band Festival will be June 11-14 in Danville. The world's best brass band musicians will play a wide variety of music including popular standards and patriotic tunes on three stages. In addition, event highlights include a chautauqua tea and presentation, bourbon and brass-tasting event, the Great American Balloon Race, the 5K Run for the Brass Race and the Main Street Parade. The Great American Picnic, the musical highlight of the festival, takes place Saturday evening from 5 to 11 p.m. on the main stage at Centre College.  Picnic table patrons decorate their tables in elaborate and colorful themes while fans bring lawn chairs and settle in for a magical evening of brass music under the stars. At the Kentucky Horse Park Campground just outside Lexington, the 36th Annual Festival of the Bluegrass will be June 11 to 14. In addition to the featured bands on the main stage, there will be two stages featuring homegrown talent along with some outstanding young musicians, a music camp and a campground cook-off. The Main Stage will feature The Grascals, Lonesome River Band, J.D. Crowe and the New South, III Time Out, Blue Highway, the Lewis Family, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Seldom Scene, Monroe Crossing, Mountain Heart, Dry Branch Fire Squad and more. The Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival will be June 13 - 20 in Bean Blossom, Ind. More than 50 bands are scheduled to appear. Gates open at 7 a.m. Parking is free. Those attending should bring lawn chairs. No coolers or alcohol will be allowed. Advance tickets are $15 - $30 for a single day or $75 - $100 for multiple days. GALLERIES

The Dawson Springs Museum and Art Center is showing an exhibit from Diana Hargrove Ceramic Art until July 10. Items on display will be for sale. Memories of Dawson Springs School Days will be shown July 14 to Aug. 18. The exhibit is a collection of photos, yearbooks, memorabilia and articles from the school’s history. The museum is at 127 S. Main St. in Dawson Springs. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m.

New Winds from Asia can be seen until July 7 at The National Quilt Museum (Museum of the American Quilter’s Society). The museum is hosting the multicultural New Winds from Asia in its only scheduled exhibit in the United States. Women in China, Korea, Japan and Taiwan used thread and fabric to produce quilts in the exhibit, expressing their artistic abilities. MAQS is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the American Quilter’s Society Show and Contest with the exhibit Best of Show: 25 Years of Quilting Excellence through July 6. The National Quilt Museum is in downtown Paducah. The museum is open year-round 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It is also open April to October from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The Ice House at 120 N. Eighth St. in Mayfield will be exhibiting Lineation, the latest art by Jason Hargrove, during the month of May. Hargrove combines technology with art to create striking paintings. His life-size moose sculpture is on exhibit in the front garden and serves as an introduction to other Hargrove sculptures inside the gallery. The exhibit will be on display until May 30. The exhibition English Silver in the Age of Matthew Boulton: The James C. Codell Jr. Collection will be on display at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville through Aug. 2. From June 7 to Sept. 13, the Museum will show City/Country: Photography from the Henry V. Heuser Jr. Collection. The exhibition will present highlights of more than 500 works donated to the museum by Henry V. Heuser Jr. Admission is free. Also on display is 4 Salvaged Boxes wHY Architecture, constructed from recycled materials and designed to produce minimal waste in its installation and transportation. When closed, the boxes serve as their own traveling crates. Opened, they unfold to reveal sustainable design features of the Grand Rapids Art Museum and many other innovative green projects. Museum hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday, 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m. The museum is at 2035 S. SPECIAL EVENTS

Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park will host a Gardening for Birds and Butterflies Weekend May 29-31. Susan Day will teach participants how to turn their backyard into a haven for birds and butterflies. Registration fee is $25, which includes an evening program, hands-on workshop and a plant. Participants should bring their own equipment, such as shovels, trowels and gardening gloves. Starting time is 7 p.m. Friday. For more information call (800) 325-1711.

Adsmore Museum will hold its fourth annual garden party, Art in the Garden, May 30. Proceeds from the event go to a garden fund to help Adsmore maintain and repair its grounds. High tea will be served from 1:30 to 3 p.m., with the Watercolor Art Guild from Trigg, Lyon and Caldwell counties displaying their art from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A watercolor will be raffled. Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 12 and are available at Adsmore House & Gardens, 304 N. Jefferson St., Princeton, Ky.

The program Feather Ticks on the Farm will take place June 7 at 1 p.m. at the Homeplace in Land Between the Lakes. Visitors can help the ladies at the Double Pen House fill ticks with feathers or corn shucks to get the beds ready for a good night's sleep, 1850's style. The program is free with HP admission. Admission to the HP is $4 for those 13 and up and $2 for those 5 - 12.

June 1-7 planetarium shows at the Golden Pond Planetarium at Land Between the Lakes will be Far Out Space Places, Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m.; Explorers of International Space Station, daily at 11 a.m.; Blown Away - The Wild World of Weather, daily at 3 p.m.; Journey to the Edge of Space and Time, daily at 2 p.m.; The Skies Above, Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. daily. Admission is $4 for those 13 and older and $2 for ages 5-12.

At the Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes, Gardening for Hummingbirds and Butterflies will be presented on June 2 at 2:15 p.m.  The program is free with NS admission. The Nature Station staff will offer a tour of the gardens, beginning with a presentation on common butterflies and the ruby-throated hummingbird, and then outside for the tour. At 2:15 p.m. on June 7 visitors can discover surprising facts about bats, beneficial but misunderstood creatures, and learn how to attract them to their yard, during this indoor presentation. National Trails Day will be observed at Land Between the Lakes on June 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a trail clean-up throughout LBL.

Selina's Engagement to Gov. John Osborne will be featured at Adsmore Museum through June 14. Docents, dressed in early 1900s-style clothing, lead tours through the Victorian home and tell visitors of the family's activities. The museum is located at 304 N. Jefferson St. in Princeton. The Pennyroyal Arts Council will host a “lei-d back” evening of island fun and good music, Party for the Arts, on June 19, at Brighton Hall, 803 S. Main Street, Hopkinsville. The Sons of the Beach will perform hits from the 50's, 60's, 70's and Carolina Beach music. There will also be a silent auction of varied items and events. Shaker Museum at South Union will have Special Demonstrations of Broom Making and Tin Cup Smithing by local artists John Campbell and Randy Hulsey June 6 (tin cup only), July 4 and August 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free with museum admission. Free Fishing Weekend and National Trails Day will be June 6 and 7 in Kentucky. As part of the weekend, Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park will host a Kids' Fishing Derby on Saturday. Fishing-related prizes will be given and refreshments will be served. Advance registration is required by May 30. Participation will be limited to 50 children ages 5 to 15. To celebrate National Trail Day, the park naturalist will lead a group on a nature hike in the Pennyrile Forest area from 2 to 4 p.m. on June 6. Participants should wear appropriate footwear and clothing, use chigger and tick repellant and bring water and snacks.

The Pennyroyal Herb Club will sponsor its 11th Annual Garden Tour (rain or shine) on June 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Madisonville and Hanson. The tour will consist of five private gardens and two public sites to visit. A plant sale will be at the Laffoon Log Cabin Community Garden on Union St. Open house for tours, garden crafts and souvenirs will be at Munn's Historic School on Princeton Rd. Tour tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children.  They can be purchased in advance at Exotic Florists, The Gift Horse, Metcalfe's Garden Center and Miss Willie's. On tour day, tickets may be purchased at the Laffoon Log Cabin Garden site or at any garden on the tour.

The Forkland Community Center will be the location for the first ever Forkland Tea. It will be June 6 at 1 p.m. A four-course tea, at $17.50 per person, will be served with traditional scones, sandwiches and sweets. Following the tea, the Abraham Lincoln Museum and library in the Forkland Community Center Museum will be available for viewing. John James Audubon State Park in Henderson will hold a fishing derby on June 13 from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Fishing experts from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife will be available to each fishing techniques.  Participants should meet at the boat dock. Children in grades 1-5 may attend an Art Workshop at Shaker Museum at South Union on June 13. They will learn about the Shakers’ artistic creations during an art workshop led by elementary art educator Melissa Rose Craven and weave a small Shaker-style basket and create a spirit drawing. Guardians must accompany children during workshop. Grades 1 and 2 will be from 10 a.m. to noon and grades 3 to 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. Reservations are $30 per child and are required. Call 800-811-8379.

There will be a Civil War Campout from 7 p.m. June 26 until noon June 27 at Shakertown at South Union. Children up to 14 years old and their guardians can spend a night under the stars and participate in drills, cooking and a scavenger hunt of the grounds with living historians in a safe environment. Guardians must accompany child at all times. Meals and tents will be provided. Participants must bring sleeping bags, snacks and clothing for outdoor wear, including proper tennis shoes or boots. Reservations are required and may be made by calling 800-811-8379. There is a $25 fee for one adult and one child or $40 for a family of four.

Shakertown at South Union will host a Shaker Farm Day on Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors will step into South Union during the 1870 harvest season and talk to some of Kentucky’s most talented artisans as they demonstrate Shaker farm chores and craft making. Activities will include wool spinning and weaving, shelling corn, making butter, smoking meat, dipping candles, old-time games, wagon rides, songs and tales from a seasoned storyteller. THEATER

“The Foreigner” at Cumberland County Playhouse's Mainstage runs through Oct. 4. Also showing at the Playhouse are “On Golden Pond,” “Shenandoah” and “Smoke on the Mountain.” Tickets are available at the CCP Box Office at 931-484-5000 and online at www.ccplayhouse.com.

Dora the Explorer Live! Will be at The Kentucky Center's Whitney Hall on June 16 at 7 p.m. and June 17, at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Dora, along with Boots, Swiper and all her friends, needs the help of the audience to solve puzzles and overcome obstacles to find her lost teddy bear. The production is recommended for children ages 2 to 6. The US Bank Community Theater summer musical “Grease” will be July 17 -19 at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased by calling (270) 824-8652.

Pine Knob Theater Under the Stars' 23rd season, consisting of six different productions, will begin June 13 and continue until Sept. 26. Tickets are $15 or two for $25. Show time for the Friday and Saturday night shows is 8 p.m. The theater is located in Pine Knob, 14 miles south of Rough River State Resort Park. “GoatSucker” and “Widow” will have their world premiere this summer as a double feature. The viewing will take place on July 25 at Byrnes Auditorium in Madisonville.
