Happy Independence Day. This year marks the 233rd birthday of the good ol' USA. I hope you have a safe and happy holiday weekend. The weather is supposed to be much cooler, you know. Actually, you are probably enjoying the break in heat right now.

Happy birthday this week to Sally Barnett, on June 29; Ty Heltsley, Gary Starks and Romney Harris on June 30; and happy anniversary to Travis and April Willett on June 30.

I haven't had a chance to talk to Fred Sharber about how the class of '79 reunion went, but I will track him down and try to get a story or two. The next reunion I am aware of is the SHHS class of 1974. This is scheduled for September and for more information or if you know someone who was in this class, please contact Robert Stearsman at 258-5238 or Robert Josey at 821-5831.

Gin Wilkerson is home recovering from a fall. She is doing well, and we hope will be out soon every morning again for her walk.

The CSI Summer Youth Program is in full swing and if you would like to enroll your child, please call 258-5776. This is an every-Wednesday event beginning with a free movie at the Capitol 8 in Madisonville.

Congratulations to Chasta Fuller, who is now a homeowner. Chasta is my niece, and she bought a little house on Elm Street. She has been hard at work fixing it up and turning it into a nice home.

Well, I took Memphis to the lake a few weeks ago for a relaxing get-away at Wrangler's. He is still not in the "lead horse" category, but he's coming along. He takes in everything and is a bit on the nervous side a lot. I guess one day he was getting a little tired. We were just in a walk coming up Ford's Bay Road, and he decided to sit down. Sat down just like a dog. I thought I was going to roll off the back of him, but he got back up. I've been riding horses for over 40 years. They've reared up and flipped over with me, fell down with me and thrown me a few times, but I have never had a horse sit down. There's a new one.

The answer to the last riddle, "How do you put an elephant in the refrigerator?" is this: First, you take out the giraffe, and then put in the elephant. If you got it right, you are good at foresight. Here's the next riddle: The Lion King is hosting an animal conference. All the animals attend except one. Which animal did not attend?

Yesterday marked the end of an era. P.O. Box 361 was officially closed. It was Nanny's address as long as I can remember. I'm sure she has been enjoying her new address for the last six months. She's been up there cooking for the entire Gapanese section and with blackberries now in season, that cobbler is smelling mighty good.

Several new Kentucky laws went into effect last Thursday. One of these was HB 124, which allows children 10 days of excused absences from school to see parents or legal guardians serving overseas in the military. That is a great 4th of July gift to all our deployed soldiers.

Elmer Davis, considered to be one of the greatest news reporters of the mid-20th century, is quoted as thus: "This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave." Gapanese translation: Be a good scout, be brave.
