CONCERTS

Kelly Clarkson will perform at 8 p.m. on opening night of the Kentucky State Fair on Aug. 20, with special guest Gavin DeGraw. Clarkson will sing songs from her latest album and hits from her seven-year career in the music industry. Tickets will be available at the Kentucky Exposition Center and Kentucky International Convention Center Ticket Offices and all Ticketmaster outlets or may be charged by phone at (800) 745-3000, or purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com.

The Kentucky State Fair will offer several free concerts in Cardinal Stadium. Concerts will be given by Peter Frampton with special guest the Afters on Aug. 20, The Commodores on Aug. 21, Shinedown and special guest Rev Theory on Aug. 22, The Oak Ridge Boys on Aug. 23, Jeremy Camp with special guest Southeast Worship Band on Aug. 24, Gary Allan with special guest Candy Coburn on Aug. 25, Bobby Vee, Peter and Gordon, Johnny Tillotson and Shirley Alston Reeves on Aug. 26, Pam and Mel Tillis on Aug. 27, Wallflowers on Aug. 28 and Billy Currington with special guest Heidi Newfield on Aug. 29. All concerts will begin at 8 p.m. Cardinal Stadium is located on the grounds of the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville.

An Evening of Up & Coming Country with Katie Armiger and special guest Mudd River Union will be presented Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. Tickets are $15 and $20. They may be purchased by calling the box office at 270-821-2787. The Glema Mahr Center for the Arts is located on the campus of the Madisonville Community College. The Glema Center Ticket Office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and four hours before performance to curtain time.

DANCE

Pam's Dance Barn at 745 Grapevine Road in Madisonville will hold dances from 7 to 10 p.m. every Saturday. There will also be dances the second and fourth Friday of each month from 7 to 10 p.m. Admission is $5. No alcohol allowed. Call 249-3663.

Activities at Loch Mary Center in Earlington will include karaoke on Thursday nights, line dancing on Friday nights and live band with Barry Potter and potluck on Saturday nights. Auditions for local children who wish to perform in The Children's Nutcracker, will be held Sept. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. The performance will be Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.

FESTIVALS

The Dawson Springs Annual Bar-B-Q Festival celebrates the city's heritage July 24 with famous barbecue, contests and music. For more information, call (270) 797-2781.

The Jasper Strassenfest, a family-oriented street festival commemorating the German heritage of Jasper, Ind., will be July 30 to Aug. 2 and Aug. 5-8. The Schweizer Fest is an outdoor street festival with live entertainment, tennis tournament, craft market, beer garden, wine-tasting garden, food and carnival rides. The Annual National Marina Day Celebration will be at Green Turtle Bay Marina and Resort and Lighthouse Landing at Grand Rivers on Aug. 8. Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival will be Aug. 7 and 8. The International Mystery Writers Festival will be Aug. 11-16 at the RiverPark Center in Owensboro. The festival features works most people have never seen produced. The world's first International Newgrass Festival will take place Aug. 21-23 at Ballance MotoX on the Historic Ballance Farms just north of Bowling Green. Headlining the three-day festival will be the surviving members of the band that started the original New Grass Revival. Sam Bush, John Cowan and Curtis Burch will each perform with their new bands alongside many newgrass performers who have followed in their footsteps. The 4th Annual Breckinridge Co. Antique Tractor and Engine Club Show will take place in Harned Sept. 4 and 5. Antique tractors and engines will be on display. Downtown After Dinner takes place in downtown Paducah every Saturday night through Sept. 5. GALLERIES

The Dawson Springs Museum and Art Center is showing an exhibit, Memories of Dawson Springs School Days, until Aug. 18. The exhibit is a collection of photos, yearbooks, memorabilia and articles from the school's history. The museum is at 127 S. Main St. in Dawson Springs. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m.

The Duncan Center Museum and Art Gallery will host sculptor William "Bill" Kolok and his exhibition of Spindle Series during July. His wood and stone carvings will be on display Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. Until July 29, the Yeiser Art Center in downtown Paducah has entries in the Summer Festival Photo Competition on exhibit. The annual show is a juried exhibit by regional artists. The exhibition English Silver in the Age of Matthew Boulton: The James C. Codell Jr. Collection will be on display at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville through December. Until Sept. 13, the Museum will show City/Country: Photography from the Henry V. Heuser Jr. Collection. The exhibition presents highlights of more than 500 works donated to the museum by Henry V. Heuser Jr. The museum will present Beyond the Log Cabin: Kentucky's Abraham Lincoln and Ed Hamilton's Lincoln until Sept. 6. The two shows celebrate the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. The Painted Veil works by James Russell May will be on exhibition through Aug. 29 at Kaviar Forge and Gallery in Louisville. The solo exhibition is part of the grand prize May won for best in show at the "Artist in Our Midst" group exhibition of 2008 held at the gallery. Through July 31 planetarium shows at the Golden Pond Planetarium at Land Between the Lakes will be Far Out Space Places, Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m.; Explorers of International Space Station, daily at 11 a.m.; Blown Away -- The Wild World of Weather, daily at 3 p.m.; Journey to the Edge of Space and Time, daily at 2 p.m.; The Skies Above, daily at 1 p.m. daily. Admission is $4 for those 13 and older and $2 for ages 5-12.

There will be Breakfast with the Hummingbirds on July 25 from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at the Nature Station. Enjoy a continental breakfast while watching the hummingbirds have a feeding frenzy of their own. Then sit back for an indoor presentation about the lives of hummingbirds. The fee of $3 per child and $5 adults per adult includes same day NS admission. At 1 p.m. Tales of Scales will introduce visitors to reptiles and amphibians such as snakes, salamanders and turtles at the NS. Program free with NS admission. An Old Time Fiddlers Contest will be held July 17 and 18 at Rough River Dam State Resort Park at Falls of Rough, Ky. Admission will be $6 on Friday and $10 on Saturday. Children 10 and under will be admitted free. Parking in the park will be free, with free trolleys to and from parking areas. An Adult Artists Retreat will take place at the John James Audubon Museum in Henderson on July 17, Aug. 14, Oct. 16 and Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Beginning to advanced artists are invited to attend the monthly retreat and create masterpieces of art. The 2009 Indian Artifacts Show will be at The Centre on July 31 and Aug. 1 and 2. Prehistoric artifacts such as arrowheads, axes, pottery and beads; historic artifacts such as moccasins, rugs and baskets; and contemporary items such as jewelry, frames, rugs and artwork will be available. Three experts will be in attendance to determine authenticity and place a value on artifacts brought in by visitors. There is a fee for the service. Admission is $6 each or $17 per family. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. A preview day on Friday will be from 1 to 6 p.m., with admission of $25, which includes admission for the remainder of the weekend. On Aug. 7 the Louisville Zoo will host a Family Night Safari in the rainforest for ages 3 to 5, with older siblings welcome as well. The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $40 per person. Bees Dance and Whales Sing: The Mysteries of Animal Communication will be presented Sept. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is $15 each or $50 for a family of four. The Collectors Carnival Antique & Flea Market will be held at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Fairgrounds in Evansville. Ind. Aug. 15 and 16. THEATER

The US Bank Community Theater summer musical "Grease" will be July 17-19 at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Closed caption will be available on Friday. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased by calling (270) 824-8652.

"GoatSucker" and "Widow" will have their world premiere this summer as a double feature. The viewing will take place on July 25 at Byrnes Auditorium in Madisonville. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the first show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased in advance at http://www.bigbitingpigproductions.com/.

As part of the celebration of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, Indiana is presenting "A New Theatrical Experience at Lincoln Amphitheatre," a 1,500-seat covered theater. Activities include an Amish family-style meal catered by Black Buggy Restaurant, pioneer games for children and adults alike, artisans demonstrating period-style tasks and playing period music and theatre under the stars. Pre-show activities begin at 5:30 p.m. and the production begins at 7:30 p.m. The amphitheatre is located inside Lincoln State Park in Lincoln City at 15032 N CR 300 East. "The Civil War," a musical, will be presented by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum on July 24-26 and July 30-Aug. 1. The play will be performed live under the stars in Union Square Park at 8 p.m., with the pre-show at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for general admission seating are $12 for adults and $8 for children 8 and under. Lawn chair seating tickets are $8 for adults and free for children 8 and under. Lawn chairs are required, but not provided. Blanket seating is $5 for adults. Blankets are not provided. Pine Knob Theater Under the Stars' 23rd season, consisting of six different productions, will continue until Sept. 26. Tickets are $15 or two for $25.
