Western Kentucky University's latest exhibit at the Kentucky Library and Museum, the Snell-Franklin Decorative Arts Gallery, is now open. More than 500 pieces of furniture, paintings and other decorative art items are represented from as early as 1300 B.C. to the mid-20th century, with the vast majority being from Kentucky. Through Dec. 15, 2009, Quiltmaking Through the War Years 1941-1945 will be exhibited at The National Quilt Museum in Paducah. The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Ill. has an exhibit to mark the 100th anniversary of the Cherry Mine Disaster, which claimed the lives of 259 men and boys. The annual Holiday Tour of Homes in Hopkinsville will be Dec. 6 from 2 - 5 p.m. Five homes in the historical and Deepwood areas of Hopkinsville will be open for viewing. They are located at 402 Deepwood Drive, 305 Edgewood, 127 Alumni Avenue, 121 Latham Avenue and 132 Latham Avenue. Tours may begin at the home of your choice. Adsmore Museum will celebrate with a Victorian Christmas until Jan. 3. A Candlelight Tour will be given on Nov. 28 at 8:30 p.m. The museum is a circa-1857 Greek Revival home at 304 N. Jefferson St. in Princeton that has been restored to its late Victorian state. It is furnished with the family's personal belongings. Hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Docents dressed in period costume guide visitors through the house and tell them stories of the family. Holiday Stroll will take place in downtown Owensboro from 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 12. Twenty-four buildings in the downtown core, the area from Clay to St. Ann along Second and Third streets, will open that evening, providing family activities, entertainment and refreshments at no charge. Entertainers for the evening will include harpists, flutists, dulcimer players, guitarists, church and school choirs, dancers, bluegrass bands and more.
Far Out Space Places will be shown at the Golden Pond Planetarium at Land Between the Lakes throughout the month of November at 10 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The show will include a visit to extreme destinations in our cosmic neighborhood such as the cliffs of the Mariner Valley on Mars, Neptune and the original lunar landing site of the Apollo astronauts. Explorers of the International Space Station will be presented on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. Blown Away: The Wild World of Weather shows incredible views of the earth's weather through spectacular footage and features a journey into space to explore the sun's effect on our weather. Christmas in 1850 will be celebrated at Land Between the Lakes Homeplace on Nov. 28 from 1 to 4 p.m. The HP farm family will show how to make traditional Christmas decorations and home-baked goodies. Santa will arrive to the sounds of Christmas carols. At the Nature Station from 2 to 4 p.m. visitors may make animal snowflakes from recycled paper. On Nov. 29 the HP staff will demonstrate how to make homemade soap at 1 p.m. and the NS will have Storytime with Opossum at 2:15 p.m. Guests can meet a live opossum and make an opossum craft to take home. Santa Claus, Ind. will host weekends of family fun during the new Santa Claus Christmas Celebration through Dec. 20. A drive through Lake Rudolph's 1.2-mile "Santa Claus Land of Lights" will reveal the magical story of Rudolph. Santa's Great Big LED Tree of Lights will come to life hourly and visitors may browse through the new Santa Claus Christmas Store, holiday arts and crafts show and other themed shops. Chestnuts may be roasted on an open fire at Santa's Candy Castle.

Kentucky Wesleyan College will present its 33rd Madrigal Dinner on Dec. 4 and 5 at 8 p.m. in the Hocker Family Dining Center. Featured performers will be the Kentucky Wesleyan Singers; Beth Stovall, conductor; and Dr. Diane Earle, accompanist. The evening will include a gourmet meal; music by the brass quartet, harpsicord and strolling minstrels; and traditional music. Tickets are $25 each and may be purchased by calling (270) 852-3104.
