Daffodils more reliable than groundhog Phil
Mortons Gap News
By Jennifer Nelson, Mortons Gap Correspondent
Greetings from the Gap. I’ve been making some occupational transitions for the past few weeks and was unable to get a column in on time, but that’s all taken care of now. The groundhog that lives down the road from us did not see his shadow last week, so I’m looking forward to an early spring. The daffodils out in the fields are already coming up from their winter slumber. Let’s hope that is a good sign.
It has been a month since the earthquake hit in Haiti and one of our native Gapanese is there in a medical capacity. Pam Foster, daughter of Yvonne and Claude Foster, is a nurse and left on Feb 2. The group she is with is called One Mission Society, based in Cap Haitian, approximately 150 miles north of Port-au-Prince. To get to Port-au-Prince, the group traveled eight hours by cattle truck. She is due home this Saturday. Please keep Pam and her group in your prayers.
My Haiti medical trip was cancelled. I was planning to leave with Hand of Hope on the 20th of the month, but due to the halting of commercial flights, our group of 30, consisting of medical volunteers from all over the world, could not get into the country. This trip was planned long before the earthquake struck. I hope to go with Hand of Hope later this year on another planned trip.
In our little town, things are a bit smoother. The guest speaker at tomorrow's South Hopkins Super Seniors' luncheon will be Jack Morris from the HC Health Dept. The meeting starts at 11, so come on out to the Mortons Gap Christian Church FLC.
All creatures great and small seem to be on the mend here on the farm. I had a little infirmary going there for a while. Chester had a hoof abscess and Cleo (Sissy) got a cold. I hope everyone is healthy for a while. My grandson Paxton had a little cold as well, but he is doing better. He has learned to walk and even run a little, so there is no stopping him now.
Happy birthday this week to twins Daniel and Jacqueline Cotton and Noah Chappel, all born on Feb. 8; Harold Johnson, Feb. 9; Jarrod Jones, today; Heath Mackey on Feb. 13; and Kenna Moore on Feb. 14.
Happy anniversary to Duane and Jo Anne Webster tomorrow, the 11th and to Ron and Janie Bourland on Valentine's Day.
Speaking of Valentine's Day, I'd like to announce this year's Sweetheart of the Gap. This young lady has brightened the lives of many over the years. She taught elementary school for Hopkins County Schools and was a favorite of her students, who always spoke well of her for many years after they left the school system. She and her husband are well-respected here in the Gap, being very involved with their local church and having hosted a few foreign exchange students over the years. I am speaking of Jean Nofsinger. Jean, congratulations on your title of Sweetheart of the Gap for 2010.
This week's quote is a famous one. Mother Teresa, the great humanitarian who served some many years in India said - "We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love." Gapanese translation: Do what you can for who you can while you can because you can.
