As if winter could be over this early anyway
Dawson Springs News
By Cassie Bruch, Dawson Springs Correspondent
Happy Wednesday, Dawson Springs. It was reported last week that groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow last Tuesday, predicting six more weeks of winter. Until this year, I didn’t realize that there were other groundhogs out there participating in the forecasting.
Groundhog Staten Island Chuck didn't notice his shadow on Feb. 2, which indicates that an early spring is in store for us. After hearing the results from New Jersey, I decided that I will side with Chuck. Then, friend Tina Campbell informed me that groundhog General Lee, who resides in Georgia (closer to our hometown of Dawson Springs), didn't see his shadow either. That's two against one, Phil. Perhaps we are in for an early spring. Cross your fingers.
Discussing the happenings of Groundhog Day 2010 with some pals, I learned from Jason Hopper that Punxsutawney Phil has acquired an accuracy rating of just 39 percent. Tina replied that General Lee's accuracy rating is only 31 percent. Looking at these poor percentages, I noticed that the groundhogs who are invited to partake in the festivities are named Phil, Chuck and General Lee -- all male groundhogs. I wondered why a female groundhog or two wasn't invited to show off their forecasting abilities. Perhaps if a female groundhog was invited to share her prediction, we could help that accuracy rating out a little. My buddy Rickey Trover didn't agree. Wink.
Girlfriends Unlimited will host Flicker Chicksù on Thursday, Feb. 11. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. at the First Baptist church. All women are welcome to participate. Thanks to Jamie Ford for the news.
