James Rawley Austin Jr.
James Rawley Austin Jr., 61, of Dalton died Saturday, Aug. 2, 2008, at Union County Methodist Hospital in Morganfield. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, obtained a law degree from Nashville School of Law and worked as an attorney for several years. He also obtained a business degree in accounting from MTSU and worked in the retail automobile business. He was a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Stephens of Dalton; his father, James Rawley Austin Sr. of Shelbyville, Tenn.; a son, James A. Austin of Goodlettsville, Tenn.; two sisters, Jackie Slaughter of Nashville and Susan Brooks of Richmond, Va.; and a brother, Joe Austin of New York City.
Graveside services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Beulah Cemetery, off Ky. 70. The Rev. Donald Burns and the Rev. James Hickerson will officiate. There will be no visitation. Melton Funeral Home in Providence is in charge of arrangements.
Henry A. Bryant
Mr. Henry A. Bryant, 70, of Dalton went home to be with his heavenly father on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at 2 a.m. He was born Jan. 21, 1938, in Hopkins County, to the late Ollie James and Imogene Taylor Bryant. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Wilana Bryant. He worked as a watchmaker at Bryant’s Jewelry for 33 years. He was a member of Dalton Baptist Church and a 1956 graduate of Dalton School. Mr. Bryant was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Wanda Baldwin Bryant of Dalton; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Bill Burden of Dalton; a son, Terry Bryant of Elizabethtown; a sister, Susan Rowan of Brentwood, Tenn.; a brother, Sonny Bryant of Madisonville; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Barnett-Strother Funeral Home, with Brother Dennis Mayfield and Brother Harry Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in Dalton Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and after 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be George Dever, Doug Harris, David Bryant, Andrew Burden, Mark Rowan, David Brooks, Brad Baldwin and T.J. Bryant. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold McNeily and Eddie Adcock. Estabel Buchanan
Estabel Buchanan, 84, of St Ann’s Lane, Waverly, Ohio, died at 12:31 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at her home. She was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Providence, the daughter of the late Elza Truman and Truma (Wilson) Harkins. On March 11, 1946, she was united in marriage to Guy Smith Buchanan, who survives. Estabel was a member of First Baptist Church in Madisonville and a former clerk for J.C. Penny Co.
Also surviving are a son, Aaron Keith Buchanan and wife Earlene of Belen, N.M.; a daughter, Lanna Buchanan of Waverly, Ohio; three grandchildren, Brent Buchanan, David Fout and wife Karen and Gayle Fallon and husband Joshua; a sister, Ella Mae Tabor; and a nephew, Wayne Tabor and wife Lynnie, both of Madisonville.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Madisonville, with Dr. Monroe Slayton officiating. There will be no visitation. Martha I. “Jo” Marks Toombs, 92, of Madisonville died at 11:55 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at NHC Healthcare in Madisonville. She was born Nov. 2, 1915, in Webster County. She was a homemaker, a nurses aide at Hopkins County Hospital and a member of First General Baptist Church in Madisonville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verchoyle L. Toombs, on July 19, 1989; her father, John Christopher Marks; her mother, Elizabeth Moore “Betty” Marks; a sister, Imogene Brooks; and four brothers, Ben, Lemuel, Bethel and Leslie Marks.
Survivors include a daughter, Patsy Toombs of Madisonville; a son, Mark Toombs of Madisonville; three brothers, John Marks and Bobby Marks, both of Evansville, and Willie Marks of Slaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Harris Funeral Home in Madisonville with Brother Harry Baldwin, the Rev. Darrell Menser and Brother Melvin Payne officiating. Burial will be in Slaughters Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today and after 8 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.harrisfuneralhome.org.
