Madisonville North Hopkins competed in the Class 4A 1st Region Track Meet in Marshall County on Wednesday and two runners who are very familiar running for a state championship will be making a return trip to Lexington this year.

North’s Jackson Watts and Joy Alexander both qualified as Alexander finished second in the girls’ 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:31.77, while Watts won the same event for the boys with a time of 4:18.05. Watts also won the boys 3,200 meter run, clocking in at 9:16.54.

Watts is coming off of a state championship title in cross country this past fall and will look to add one more state championship in track before heading off to Lexington for the next four years to run cross country for the University of Kentucky.

As for Alexander, she’s also coming off of a state meet appearance in cross country last fall. She ran in the last KHSAA State Meet in track back in 2019 before the 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19.

The state meet will be held June 10-12 at the University of Kentucky Track and Field Complex.
